We got a new project: TENSPIN
The TENSPIN project is aimed at improving the quality of life and social inclusion of children and adolescents suffering from Spina Bifida (SB) through sport, and especially by organizing and promoting wheelchair tennis (WT) courses.
Spina bifida (SB) is the most common congenital anomaly of the central nervous system compatible with life. It represents one of the most severe defects of the neural tube, which is the basis for the development of the brain and spinal cord. SB is caused by the incomplete development of one or more vertebrae, the spinal cord and its sheaths and/or the surrounding skin.
It has a worldwide incidence of approximately 2-8 per 10,000 newborns and is the leading cause of pediatric disability. Several studies have shown that youth with SB perceive a lower level of quality of life compared to their peers, particularly in relation to the aspects of physical functioning, and in the emotional and social/school domains.
For people with spina bifida, a fundamental role is physical exercise, which has become even more important for children and adolescents, not only because of the obvious benefits that sport has for health, but also because of the positive effects it has on the mind and social integration.
Two pilot projects will be implemented, one in Rome (Italy) and one in Zagreb (Croatia): at least 5 SB children/adolescents will attend WT courses and their health status will be monitored to assess improvement in physical, cognitive, psychological and level of social attitude.
In addition, the TENSPIN project will promote the organisation of sports courses, especially WT courses in sports centers in different locations (including rural areas and suburban areas) to facilitate access to physical activities for people with Spina bifida. It will also contribute to raising awareness among SB families about the importance of sports for the motor and mental re-education of children and adolescents in order to increase the quality of life and encourage social inclusion.
