Two-Day Meeting in Istria: Sports Clubs and Adriatic Sea Conservation at the Heart of the ReSea Project

A two-day meeting within the Erasmus+ Sport ReSea project, in which HAŠK Mladost is a partner, took place in Poreč on 1 and 2 October 2026. The meeting brought together representatives of sports organisations to strengthen cooperation and encourage practical initiatives aimed at protecting the Adriatic Sea and its coastal areas. The programme also included a visit to the protected natural area of Cape Kamenjak.

In cooperation with the Sports Association of the City of Poreč-Parenzo, three local sports clubs have been involved in the project activities: Poreč Swimming Club (Plivački klub Poreč), DPDSR Poreč Diving Club and Horizont Poreč Sailing Club (JK Horizont Poreč). As their sporting activities take place in and on the sea, these clubs are particularly well placed to raise environmental awareness and promote more sustainable sporting practices.

The first day focused on project activities and cooperation between the participating sports organisations, highlighting the importance of responsible use of natural resources and exploring ways in which sports clubs can become more actively involved in protecting the Adriatic Sea, its coastline and islands.

Visiting Cape Kamenjak and Exploring the Challenges of Coastal Conservation

On the second day, participants visited Cape Kamenjak and the Kamenjak Public Institution, based in Premantura, which manages this valuable protected natural area.

The ReSea delegation was welcomed by the institution’s director, Slobodan Belević, who presented the area’s management practices, highlighting both the challenges and positive examples of its long-term conservation.

The institution manages approximately 400 hectares of land and around 30 kilometres of coastline, requiring systematic and continuous efforts to preserve its natural heritage. Particular attention is given to protecting the bays and sensitive environments where terrestrial and marine ecosystems meet.

The visit provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and learn about practical approaches to managing protected natural areas, while also exploring how sports clubs and their activities can contribute to environmental conservation.

Connecting Sport and Sustainability

The two-day meeting once again highlighted the importance of cooperation between sports organisations, local communities and environmental protection institutions. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of clubs whose activities are directly connected to the sea and which can encourage more responsible environmental behaviour through their everyday practices.

The meeting was organised as part of the international project ReSea – Sustainable Management of Sports Practice towards the Socio-Ecological Regeneration of Maritime and Coastal Areas, co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ Sport programme. The project focuses on developing more sustainable sporting practices and strengthening the contribution of sport to the protection and regeneration of marine and coastal ecosystems.
