We connected the STAY and EU TeqGames projects in Rome

What happens when you combine water polo, volunteering, European projects, and a vibrant sports atmosphere in Rome?

You get Petra Gregorina — a young and active member of ŽAVK Mladost and participant in the STAY! project, who had the opportunity to volunteer at an international Teqball tournament as part of the EU Teq Games held in Italy.

Thanks to the collaboration between two partners in the STAY project — HAŠK Mladost and SS Lazio — Petra travelled to Ostia, where the tournament took place, and actively participated in its organization. What was that experience like? Petra shares more with us below.

Petra, this was your first Teqball tournament. What were your first impressions?

This was my first Teqball tournament, held from April 3rd to 6th in Italy, and I can honestly say it was an incredible experience. Although it wasn’t my first time helping organize a sports event, this one was on a “next level” and completely new for me.

How did you experience your role as a volunteer?

I came as a volunteer, but I never felt like one. From the very beginning, I was welcomed as a part of the team because I had the support of friends and everyone involved in the project. The atmosphere was truly like a family, which was very motivating and inspiring.

What tasks were you involved in?

I was involved in many aspects of the tournament’s organization. I helped interview players and coaches, filmed content, managed live scoring during matches, and handled many other organizational tasks. Although I wasn’t originally assigned to officiating, I eventually decided to try being an assistant referee in Teqball. I saw it as another opportunity to expand my experience and develop new skills.

And what was the team atmosphere like?

The meetings I attended were honestly fun and full of laughter. I often heard from the team, “It’s not usually like this… we’re normally more serious.” That only motivated me more to give my best and make the experience even more meaningful. The entire tournament was incredible, and I would definitely recommend anyone to take part in similar events.

What would you say to young people considering similar opportunities?

Being part of this community was priceless. I encourage everyone to get involved in these kinds of projects because you’ll grow not just professionally, but personally as well. I went beyond what I was initially supposed to do, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Every minute of the experience was worth it, and I’m sure I’d do it again every month if I could.

Final thoughts?

I want to thank the entire team and everyone who gave me this opportunity. I’m excited about future challenges and new experiences.

This activity is a great example of how projects like STAY and EU Teq Games can empower young people through skill development, sports connections, and experiences that go beyond the boundaries of their local communities.

HAŠK Mladost will continue to bring together projects, sport, and people into stories that leave a lasting impact.
