EU Sport Forum 2026: key topics shaping the future of European sport
On 15–16 April 2026, the EU Sport Forum took place in Paphos, Cyprus, bringing together around 200 representatives from across the European sport ecosystem. As the European Union’s flagship annual sport event, the Forum is hosted by the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The European Multisport Club Association (EMCA) was represented by its President Christina Tsligkiri and Director for Development & Sustainability Bojan Mijatović, contributing to discussions on key challenges and opportunities in European sport.
Balancing talent development and solidarity
One of the central topics focused on the balance between rewarding talent and maintaining solidarity within the sport system. In the panel “Rewarding talent in sport: boosting solidarity and competitive balance”, EMCA’s President addressed the importance of creating a fair and sustainable environment that supports development at all levels.
This topic is particularly relevant for organisations such as HAŠK Mladost, which promote inclusive and long-term sport development while ensuring equal opportunities for participation.

Sport as a driver of health and inclusion
The Forum highlighted the ongoing shift in the role of sport – from performance-focused to people-centred.
The session “Not just medals: rethinking sport for lifelong wellbeing” emphasised the importance of physical activity, inclusion, and long-term engagement in sport. This approach aligns with many European initiatives and projects in which HAŠK Mladost is actively involved, focusing on accessibility and support for diverse target groups.
Strengthening cooperation through sport
The panel “Uniting the Mediterranean through sport” explored how sport can serve as a platform for international cooperation and cultural exchange. Discussions were linked to the objectives of the “Pact for the Mediterranean”, highlighting sport’s role in promoting stability, collaboration, and regional development.
Speakers shared practical examples of how European cooperation can contribute to meaningful impact across the Mediterranean region.
Integrity and anti-doping efforts
Integrity in sport remained a key priority. Lisa Benaglia from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) presented the outcomes of the GAIIN project, which resulted in significant confiscations of prohibited substances intended for global distribution.
This reinforces the importance of continued efforts to protect fairness and credibility in sport.
The future of European basketball
One of the most discussed topics was the future structure of European basketball.
The panel “Integrity and investment: a sustainable future for European basketball” introduced the joint FIBA–NBA initiative for a potential NBA Europe, opening broader discussions on the organisation of club competitions.
With participation from FIBA, EuroLeague, and NBA Europe representatives, the debate highlighted the need for coordinated approaches in shaping the future of the sport.
Why the EU Sport Forum matters for organisations like HAŠK Mladost
The EU Sport Forum continues to serve as a key platform for knowledge exchange, policy development, and networking across the European sport sector.
For organisations such as HAŠK Mladost, actively involved in European projects and initiatives, the Forum provides valuable insights and supports the alignment of ongoing activities with current European priorities in sport, inclusion, and sustainability.
