QIS – All In: Project on Sports Facility Accessibility and Partner Meeting in Malaga

The QIS – All In project is a new Erasmus+ Sport initiative focused on evaluating sports facilities and their readiness to accommodate people with disabilities. The goal of the project is to develop a system and a handbook that will help assess how inclusive and accessible sports facilities are for individuals with different types of disabilities.

The project is coordinated by the Portuguese Paralympic Committee, with HAŠK Mladost and the European Multisport Club Association (EMCA) among its partners. The project started this year and will last 30 months.

The second project meeting was held on 16–17 October in Malaga (Spain), where a draft version of the handbook for assessing the capacity of sports facilities was presented. The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and explore practical insights into inclusive sports design.

A special highlight of the meeting was the visit of Jose Manuel Quintero, a world-renowned paratriathlete, who became paralysed from the waist down at the age of 11 due to an error during a routine spinal surgery. Jose shared his inspiring story, showing how obstacles can become motivation for change — both in sport and in society.

Participants also visited a newly built sports centre in Malaga, designed to meet the needs of people with various types of disabilities, not only wheelchair users. They had the opportunity to watch a goalball training session — a Paralympic sport for visually impaired athletes, in which teams aim to score in 9-metre-wide goals, relying solely on sound and spatial awareness.

The QIS – All In project continues to develop tools that will help sports organisations, architects, and local communities create sports facilities accessible to everyone, without exception.
